About the Course about a Man

Dallas Willard did not set out to become one of the most important Christian thinkers of the twentieth century. He grew up in rural Missouri, shaped by loss and poverty and a quiet hunger for God that no one around him could fully name. What followed was a remarkable life of formation — forty-seven years as a philosophy professor at a world-renowned university, and a lifetime of quiet, conversational friendship with Jesus that authenticated everything he said and wrote. His work, and above all the Jesus he knew, changed thousands of lives, Doug included!

Dallas Willard put it this way:

“Looking to the lives and personalities of great disciples has always been an especially potent factor in my own life. Generally, to keep company with genuine students and co-laborers of Jesus, living or ‘fully living,’ will help us come to the place of effective intention and decision for ourselves.” — The Divine Conspiracy, p. 297

For tens of thousands of us, Dallas is exactly that — one of those great disciples to keep company with. He has been, for many of us across decades, our Lucy leading us into the Narnia of the Kingdom of God.

This course follows Gary Moon’s definitive biography chapter by chapter across seven weeks — tracing the arc of Willard’s life through Moon’s three movements: Part 1, The First Thirty Years; Part 2, Three Kingdoms; Part 3, Finishing Well. Along the way we encounter the ideas that shaped Willard, the friendships that formed him, and the vision that the Kingdom of God is not a destination we wait for but a reality we can enter now — as apprentices of Jesus, formed from the inside out.

That vision fuels Jesus College. And this course is where the journey gets personal as illustrated in the life of Dallas Willard as a model for us to follow.

We are not just studying a biography.

We are being apprenticed and formed through one.

Led by - Doug Webster, Vice Chancellor, Jesus College

What to Expect - Each session is thirty minutes of interaction highlighting what Doug and participants find captivating from the designated reading for that session. At thirty minutes you will be blessed with Doug’s sincere signature — “Shalom & Agape” — followed by, as many of you already know, Doug’s “lingering longer” for up to another thirty minutes of dialogue about the book.

The Format - This course is different from our regular Jesus College offerings. It is less a lecture series and more a guided conversation — a book club among friends of Jesus and friends of Dallas, exchanging inspiring stories and quotes from one man’s remarkable life.

Materials - You’ll benefit by purchasing your own printed or audio book and pre-reading the assigned pages to better engage the conversation.

Dallas Input: Pending a glitch-free connection, short audio and video teachings from Dallas himself may be woven into select sessions — a rare and welcome gift for anyone who loves the man and his voice.

A Note on What This Course Is Building Toward

Becoming Dallas Willard is the first course in a larger movement. This summer Jesus College is launching a full Kingdom formation pathway — including a second course, For Such a Time as This, beginning in July, and the release of The Lost Kingdom on August 25. Dallas Willard gave us the diagnosis. The Lost Kingdom is the map. And this course is where the journey begins.

Donor support - Jesus College can offer this course free globally through our non-profit ministry because of generous financial support. We welcome your financial partnership. Donations can be processed through this safe link — Jesus College / Donate.
